A Biography
Susie Burpee is a multi-faceted dance artist with over twenty-five years of experience in the performing arts in Canada. Traversing both dance and theatre, her professional career includes choreography, performance, teaching, and mentorship.
An award-winning performer, Susie has worked with many notable artists and companies, including Dance Collective, Ruth Cansfield, Serge Bennathan, Marie-Josée Chartier, Peter Chin, Dancemakers, Susanna Hood, Le Groupe Dance Lab, and Tedd Robinson. As a company dancer at Le Groupe Dance Lab (Artistic Director Peter Boneham), Susie developed a keen interest in creative process and choreographic development, and she is now sought after as an outside eye and rehearsal director. As a choreographer, Susie’s critically acclaimed works have been seen across the country at various festivals and presentation platforms.
Her work focuses on the intersections of creator and performer, and the collision of chance and craft. She has received multiple Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Performance, and she is a recipient of the K.M. Hunter Artist Award for Dance. Susie studied Character and Bouffon with Philippe Gaulier, and she occasionally calls upon her alter ego, Allegra Charleston, to dialogue in her place. She is a proud board member of the Toronto Dance Community Love-In and Rock Bottom Movement, and a member of CADA-ON, CDA, and DTRC.
In 2020, Susie completed a Master’s degree in Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies at The University of Toronto. She is now Executive Director of Balancing Act. an initiative to support parents and caregivers in the performing arts.
Susie was born and raised in Manitoba, and her prairie heart now beats strong in Toronto, where she lives with her family.
